I just blogged about a situation at the South LA Shelter involving an owned dog which was impounded and waiting for its owner and was released to a "rescuer" BEFORE his "available" date--and before the owner had received the message that her dog was at the shelter-- by...guess who? Brenda Barnette and Sleazy Salazar, carrying out her orders. That dog had the microchip removed and was adopted from the SLA shelter six months before. BB and her flunky Salazar gave it to a rescuer they didn't even know, not part of the City adoption partners (NEW HOPE), AND that rescue had the dog's microchip surgically removed.
Then BB writes to the dog owner that she doesn't know if removing a microchip is "best standards practice for veterinarians." The shelters can work with Avid about changing a microchip for those adopting a chipped pet from the shelter that the owner doesn't claim. Why not go that route unless you have something to hide? http://workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com/2011/06/i-throw-up-my-hands-brenda-barnette.html
And now Boffo Barnette sends this out?? Her department is being investigated for this removal of a microchip! How safe is a microchip if it can be removed even when those in charge knew there was an owner? Barnette, you make us all feel unsafe now about our microchipped pets. Is this your idea of a sick joke?

After learning about the removed microchip, would you want to take your animal to get a microchip at the very place this happened? Not me!

As an employee at LAAS, please allow me to set the record straight. The microchip was NOT removed by LAAS. The rescue took the dog to a private vet and when the dog was returned to the South LA shelter, the microchip was gone. While not perfect, microchips are an important tool to help increase an owner's chance of getting their pet back if he/she gets lost. If you do choose to get a microchip, please make sure to keep your contact info with the chip company as up-to-date as possible. Thanks.
Employee, of course you can set the record straight but I never meant to imply that LAAS removed the microchip. What LAAS has failed to do is investigate why this rescue removed that microchip when there is an alternative.
Microchips are great, except when there is a problem with their removal. I said it before, I won't take my pet to a place that cooperated with covering up the removal by not requesting an investigation.
