CONCERNING BRENDA BARNETTE

I've gotten some comments as to why I am not writing as much anymore. Others do a much better job and are writing about events. Of course, they don't put my slant on things.

To be honest, there is just too much work right now to keep this blog going. Although I want to everyday, it's hard to do when you are writing to legislators all day.

I will make an effort to do a little more with the blog. Much of it has been 'dedicated' to the breeder, Brenda Barnette. Obviously, no one in LA much read it when it first came out, but they are reading it now.

LA got what it wished for, No Kill. It wasn't what you thought, was it LA? Tried to tell you, didn't want to hear it. My problem now is if Barnette does leave, who will take her place. No one in their right mind who is capable of fixing LAAS would be willing to do it UNLESS No Kill is kicked to the curb and never brought up again. Otherwise, LA is doomed to repeat the mistakes made with Boks and Barnette. I fear an even worse person will be hired, Jon Cicirelli from San Jose. He wants the job.

I just hope that LA doesn't jump out of the pot into the fire. If they don't start learning their lessons from the past, they are doomed to repeat them in the future.

CRYING IN THEIR VEGAN SOUP TODAY, THE CONFEDERATION OF DUNCES ARE LOSERS

Poor little Dougie, Ledy, Pacelle, Whiney. They are all crying in their vegan soup at this point. 

They have been stopped in their tracks this year. Very proud to report that during the first quarter of the 2015 legislative season, state preemption bills prohibiting local governments from enacting breed-specific laws were brought in five states

AND IN ALL FIVE STATES THE LEGISLATION FAILED !! - 

To put it simply, so far in 2015 Best Fiends has a 0% success rate in passing legislation. Last year, 2014, wasn't much better with only a 33% success rate.

This is without money and that makes it all the more amazing. Grassroots all the way. 

Yeah, poor Dougie with all his efforts, if you want to call his uneducated rants an effort, failed to convince people. Guess folks just don't read that rag he writes for.

ARE LA'S TRANSPORTED DOGS GOING TO CANADA FOR THE DINNER TABLE?

I'm quite sure that most people know that some cultures do eat dogs. I know that we Americans find that offensive. I also know that several years ago LA had people getting a mama and her litter out only to bring the mama back after the puppies were weaned. Seems the biggest delicacy is the puppies. (This is so hard to even think about, much less write about.) At that time, people only had to pay fees for the one dog, now they must pay for each puppy as well. So that original policy helped to curb that situation. But there is a lot of rumor that Brenda Barnette is in such a hurry to get her stats down that she is allowing entire liters with Mom's go to out only for the cost of the Mom.  That CANNOT be allowed.  If the foster brings that animals back in good condition they should get their deposit back (for each pup.)  Also, rescues should have to pay for EACH puppy.  We don't really know what happens to those that get "transported."

Now first you need to read this story about a stolen dog taken from the shelter with a frantic owner looking for it. The dog was taken by a "rescue" who immediately removed the chip that the responsible owner had put in. It talks about the Canadians who still sell to labs, and who eat dogs. No offense to our Canadian neighbors but this is the truth. 

TRANSPORTING SHELTER DOGS TO CANADA – POSSIBILITY OF SLAUGHTER?

A January 2011 Opposing Views article, L.A. Shelter Dogs Transported to Canada, Rescue or Ruse?,” discussed the American mania to transport dogs from shelter to shelter, rescue to rescue, and even out of the country to attempt to give the impression the U.S. is becoming “No Kill”.  Many of these transports involve shipping mostly smaller dogs and Pit Bulls to Canada, with no monitoring or follow-up on their ultimate destination. It is important that anyone involved in or condoning this practice is aware of the following:

So the question does arise, are our dogs ending up on dinner tables from these transports that are totally unregulated. With all the money making schemes being unraveled lately surrounding "No Kill", someone just might be making a buck off dog steaks.

LMAO!! I TOLD YOU SO, LA, BRENDA BARNETTE WAS HIRED TO PRIVATIZE !!

It is bittersweet to say, "I told you so" to those in LA that Barnette was there to privatize. Many said no, resisted the thought. I fought Barnette in King County along side of the ACO Guild there, advising them about "No Kill" and how it operates. I know about this woman. She was part of a plan to privatize by undermining animal control. What is "undermining"? Lying, same difference.

(Barnette gave away a brand new shelter to Best Fiends) "The adoptions from the Best Friends shelter have been less than stellar … and I think that is because the agreement only allows them to take the 'leftovers' … meaning animals that are not adopted by the public or taken by rescue groups…so that means they are left with a whole lot of pit bulls, Chihuahuas and tabby cats … making it more difficult for rescues to get animals out of the shelter would leave more 'desirable' animals to go to Best Friends and thus improve their adoption numbers to justify a private group taking more responsibility by doing better," a key source tells me.

Some local animal rights activists agree with that appraisal entirely and think that a privatization contract will favor New Hope.  Others think that the second half of the statement only speaks of rescue agencies that aren't performing optimally.

"My feeling is that she is not a very good communicator, and that hinders the progress of any kind of partnership and progress in project management," animal activist and animal education proponent Paul Darrigo told me.  Darrigo spearheads a group that has provided education to Reserve Animal Control Officers (RACOs) whose vision has been to provide LAAS with fifty reserve, fully-empowered Animal Service officials, the way the Sheriff’s Department and the Police Department staff reserve officers.  But unlike earlier General Managers, Barnette has taken administrative actions that diminish the presence of RACOs within the city and many speculate that the only reason to do so is to pave the way for a single private controlling organization.

BRENDA BARNETTE: ONCE AGAIN FAILS TO PROMOTE SPAY/NEUTER

When will this broad learn that spay/neuter is the one most important thing when it comes to pets? Once again, Breeder Barnette sends out a "press" release  that fails to mention spay/neuter. I can appreciate Halloween tips but the biggest and more important tip of all is missing.

HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY TIPS

Make this holiday fun for your furry family members, too!

Halloween can be a festive and fun time of year for children and families, but for pets it can be stressful and even dangerous. Here are some ways to keep it fun and safe:

This is the perfect time to make sure your pet is licensed, microchipped and wearing up-to-date identification. A dog license helps our Officers get your lost pet safely home. 

          

Plan ahead to keep your companion animals in a room away from the front door when trick-or-treaters are visiting. It is too easy for them to become frightened by the goblins and slip out the door.

Chocolate and other seemingly harmless ingredients can be poisonous to dogs and cats, so keep them out of reach. Dispose of the wrappers where pets can’t get them to avoid choking.  Also, remember that children may not understand why Fluffy can’t share their treats, so use this as a teaching opportunity.

Tail wagging is a good thing – unless it’s done around a lit candle! Keep candles and lit Jack-o-Lanterns at an appropriate height where your pets can’t knock them over or get burned.

A decorative collar is far more comfortable than a costume for your pet. Make sure your pet thinks a costume is as much fun as you do before you dress them up for Halloween.

By following these helpful tips, Halloween can be a fun and safe holiday for pets and people alike!   

Trick or Treat! 

Now, my suggestion and something I do each year at Halloween. I put a sheet in each child's bag with information regarding spay/neuter. I also include information regarding chocolate, onions, grapes, etc. being toxic to pets. I tell the children that the information sheets are for their parents. Every year that I have done this, I get at least a couple of visits from parents about this information and it results in pets being altered. 

Why can't you put this kind of emphasis on spay/neuter, Breeder Barnette? You can't because your mindset is that of a breeder and we don't need a breeder in charge of animal control because you won't enforce the law regarding spay/neuter. Go back to where you came from, Barnette.

BRENDA BARNETTE’S NO-KILL PLAN:

SHUTTING DOWN BOTH VALLEY SHELTERS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON ONLY KILLS A FEW!!!

On January 24, the Los Angeles Daily News published an article about the City Council considering shutting down city agencies one day a week. Here’s the quote about Breeder Barnette, “

“On the humane front, Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette said it will mean euthanizing more animals and even more limited kennel space. According to a quote in the LA Daily News about the City considering shutting down some city services by one day a week it will mean more euthanasia.” http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_17187290

But “more euthanasia" didn’t seem to bother her last weekend, when she sent the following notification about closing both the East and West Valley shelters for Saturday afternoon to New Hope partners and another rendition to employees. She reportedly told one rescuer that closing both the East and West Valley shelters for what should be one of the busiest times of the week for people to find lost animals and adopt a new pet, wasn’t a problem because they only adopt out about five.

Now, if the GM of one of the largest shelter systems in the world can only get five adoptions on a Saturday afternoon in two of the busiest shelters, I’d say there’s something wrong. I suggest we see if we can get more bang for the $180,000 bucks per year that we pay her from tax money.

The notification sent to the New Hope partners:

The West Valley and East Valley Animal Care Shelters will close at Noon on Saturday 2/26/11 in honor of Captain Helen Brakemeier, a dedicated 26-year member of the LAAS family who passed away on Sunday, and to allow our staff to attend her memorial services. The other shelters (WLA, NC, SLA, & H) will maintain regular business hours.
While New Hope Partners do have access to the Animal Care Centers after business hours with prior scheduling to evaluate animals, there will not be any Clerks available to process New Hope Adoptions at the East Valley and West Valley shelters after 12pm on 2/26/11. West Valley and East Valley will be open again at 11am on Sunday, 2/27/11 for regular business.

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS WOMAN THINKING? CERTAINLY SHE DOESN'T THINK LIKE AN ANIMAL CONTROL AGENCY MANAGER. What if there had been an emergency or disaster and all the officers were in one location out of Los Angeles? What if a cattle truck had overturned on the freeway? What if there’s been a big structure fire in the Valley where lots of animals needed to be removed? This is how Barnette “honors” a career employee who devoted her life to saving animals? Capt. Helen Brakemeier, would have never thought closing the shelters and risking even one animal being killed or not adopted or not taken home is a “tribute” to her!

Why didn’t the shelters stay OPEN in honor of Capt. Brakemeier? Why didn’t a living, growing tree get planted at the shelter with a plague in honor of Capt. Brakemeier’s life? I’m sure Helen Brakemeier would have opted for life for those five animals, even if Breeder Barnette thinks five “precious lives” (to quote the ADL-LA) are insignificant.
