JUDIE, JUDIE, JUDIE

I've written on this very blog about Judie Mancuso, even called her a hero. So you can imagine my disappointment when I received her latest email notice.

LA City has passed an ordinance banning pet shops from selling puppies and kittens from puppy mills. Do I have a problem with that, not at all. However, there is more to this story than that.

It appears that Judie doesn't grasp the underbelly behind this action, it wasn't in the vein of helping our shelter animals. Judie is subscribing to that piece of meat thrown out by Koretz and Barnette. Judie's version:

And for those of you wondering where people will be able to find that pure bred puppy or kitten they just have to have, this ordinance will help make those folks do their due diligence in finding a reputable breeder, instead of the impulse buy of a puppy or kitten shipped in from a mill thousands of miles away from the Midwest. We cannot control these cruel mills in the Midwest that ship tens of thousands of puppies and kittens per year into California (while we’re killing over 500,000 in our shelters) but we can certainly decrease the demand for them.

Then let's look at the "impulse buy" referred to. Those in "reputable" rescue don't care for those impulse adoptions/buys. And we also ask people to carefully consider bringing in a pet to their home. So now are they going to do the "impulse buy" thing with these shelter animals in pet stores? Shelter animals usually come with baggage, is this going to add to that baggage when they are returned, thrown out in the back yard? What is the deal here? Are we not in this to seek quality for our pets? No, Judie, this was not done to help, this was done for vile reasons and it will not accomplish what you think it will. Don't be gullible.

ARE LA'S TRANSPORTED DOGS GOING TO CANADA FOR THE DINNER TABLE?

I'm quite sure that most people know that some cultures do eat dogs. I know that we Americans find that offensive. I also know that several years ago LA had people getting a mama and her litter out only to bring the mama back after the puppies were weaned. Seems the biggest delicacy is the puppies. (This is so hard to even think about, much less write about.) At that time, people only had to pay fees for the one dog, now they must pay for each puppy as well. So that original policy helped to curb that situation. But there is a lot of rumor that Brenda Barnette is in such a hurry to get her stats down that she is allowing entire liters with Mom's go to out only for the cost of the Mom.  That CANNOT be allowed.  If the foster brings that animals back in good condition they should get their deposit back (for each pup.)  Also, rescues should have to pay for EACH puppy.  We don't really know what happens to those that get "transported."

Now first you need to read this story about a stolen dog taken from the shelter with a frantic owner looking for it. The dog was taken by a "rescue" who immediately removed the chip that the responsible owner had put in. TRANSPORTING SHELTER DOGS TO CANADA – POSSIBILITY OF SLAUGHTER?

A January 2011 Opposing Views article, L.A. Shelter Dogs Transported to Canada, Rescue or Ruse?,” discussed the American mania to transport dogs from shelter to shelter, rescue to rescue, and even out of the country to attempt to give the impression the U.S. is becoming “No Kill”.  Many of these transports involve shipping mostly smaller dogs and Pit Bulls to Canada, with no monitoring or follow-up on their ultimate destination. It is important that anyone involved in or condoning this practice is aware of the following:

So the question does arise, are our dogs ending up on dinner tables from these transports that are totally unregulated. With all the money making schemes being unraveled lately surrounding "No Kill", someone just might be making a buck off dog steaks.

It is bittersweet to say, "I told you so" to those in LA that Barnette was there to privatize. Many said no, resisted the thought. I fought Barnette in King County along side of the ACO Guild there, advising them about "No Kill" and how it operates. I know about this woman. She was part of a plan to privatize by undermining animal control. What is "undermining"? Lying, same difference.

(Barnette gave away a brand new shelter to Best Fiends) "The adoptions from the Best Friends shelter have been less than stellar … and I think that is because the agreement only allows them to take the 'leftovers' … meaning animals that are not adopted by the public or taken by rescue groups…so that means they are left with a whole lot of pit bulls, Chihuahuas and tabby cats … making it more difficult for rescues to get animals out of the shelter would leave more 'desirable' animals to go to Best Friends and thus improve their adoption numbers to justify a private group taking more responsibility by doing better," a key source tells me.

Some local animal rights activists agree with that appraisal entirely and think that a privatization contract will favor New Hope.  Others think that the second half of the statement only speaks of rescue agencies that aren't performing optimally.

"My feeling is that she is not a very good communicator, and that hinders the progress of any kind of partnership and progress in project management," animal activist and animal education proponent Paul Darrigo told me.  Darrigo spearheads a group that has provided education to Reserve Animal Control Officers (RACOs) whose vision has been to provide LAAS with fifty reserve, fully-empowered Animal Service officials, the way the Sheriff’s Department and the Police Department staff reserve officers.  But unlike earlier General Managers, Barnette has taken administrative actions that diminish the presence of RACOs within the city and many speculate that the only reason to do so is to pave the way for a single private controlling organization.

LA CONTROLLER SLAMS ANIMAL SERVICES FOR MISSING EQUIPMENT AND MONEY

Controller Greuel finally completed her audit of LA Animal Services. Now this can read both ways. BUT, if you understand the political nature of this, it reads pretty much one way, Breeder Barnette has a lot of explaining to do

Usually I do excerpts from articles but there's just too much here. Many of the mentioned things I have done previous posts on. I was speaking with a friend about this and we both agree that Barnette should have come in and have been able to overcome all these things within the almost two years she has been on the job. These are just plain management problems, and should have been her first priorities. She screwed around on the licensing issue, taking ACOs from the field to walk door to door like vacuum salesmen, when there were other methods that would achieve better results.

Now to beat the band, Terri Macellaro has resigned from the LA Animal Services Commission. This really has me shaking my head. A better thing could not happen with Macellaro's baggage, literally and figuratively. I think she is going to make a run for Barnette's job. Barnette must be a big disappointment for the ADL-LA and Macellaro. I'd say things should start getting interesting soon.

Ruthanne Secunda, a Hollywood talent agent and president of Much Love Animal Rescue, quit early this month after she was accused of failing to license her three dogs, then voting to cut penalties for owners of unlicensed dogs. She later volunteered to pay five years of licensing fees, with penalties.


I bet Ed Boks is laughing his face off at LA right now. If it weren't so sad, I would be laughing with him. 

LA ANIMAL SERVICES SINKS FURTHER UNDER BRENDA BARNETTE AND PAUL KORETZ

Well, folks, just when we thought LA Animal Services couldn't sink any lower, guess what? It hasn't bottomed out yet! Now Koretz squirmed himself even further into the Barnette's World of Breeders and so that he, as new head of the Personnel Committee, will have sole oversight of "animal welfare:. Yep, it's now the LA City Personnel & Animal Welfare Committee. Quite a stretch, huh? Where's the Homeless Children Committee or the Elderly Poor in the Streets Committee? Is he talking about city personnel & animals as one group that need welfare? Well, what ever it is, it certainly is a manipulation and wouldn't you say, a conflict of interest for Koretz?  Isn't this the proverbial fox in charge of the hen house?

 

Here are the facts. Before Barnette got here, Koretz ran to the Mayor and whined his way onto the selection team. Since MV is always glad to share the blame, he jumped on that. So there was Paul Koretz, looking like the proud papa introducing Barnette at a press conference and talking about her being the best thing to ever happen to LA animals.

 

What did he base that on? Well, she was a breeder and the AKC Legislative Rep in Seattle. I guess that was good enough for him, since some of Koretz's best friends are breeders, according to a letter sent to him and posted by a big-time Encino breeder. (Remember that one? "We MUST have this increase in animals...Louis Krokover of the Encino Neighborhood Council wrote to Koretz as Koretz pushed for 10 adult animals and all the pups and kittens you want to breed in every yard in Los Angeles.). By the way Krokover also seems to have a little thing going with one of Koretz deputies! It's sort of incentuous, just like dog breeding.. Koretz, who thinks he is the expert on animals because he has a cat and had a puppy mill dog he got from a pet shop, he says.. So that qualifies him as an expert?

 

Now with LA Animal Services under his thumb, Barnette can continue torturing her staff and screwing up the department and getting what she really wants--Destroy LAAS! Remember in Seattle, Claire Davis replaced her on the committee and wrote to the CAO of Seattle, "We have spent 1-1/2 years trying to destabilize King County AC." Well, looks like that's about how long it's taking in LA but now Barnette has had some practice. And she has "Sleazy" Salazar who already proved he knows how to wreck the workplace and get the City sued.

 

So now, with Koretz, Barnette and Slazar in total charge, watch out City Council. The Big One may be coming. I heard it cost Riverside several mil. With the larger harassed staff at LAAS, let's see how that would add up.

 

And to get back to that conflict of interest, Koretz hired Barnette, has used her to try to get the animal increase for his buddies and can we say probably his best campaign contributors???? They are joined at the hip on all the stupid and useless things Koretz wants passed and Barnette gets to continue whipping the employees in her department while Mr. Personnel Committee Koretz turns a blind eye. It's just so perfect! And so sadistic! Pity the Animal Services Department. They are sinking like that Italian cruise ship, sunk by a City Council that doesn't care whether there are officers in a fire or earthquake disaster or out keeping the bad assed pit bulls from attacking people in LA. Well San Diego had three deaths by pit bull and a lot more attacks in just last year. With Koretz, Barnette, Salazar and pit bull loving Best Friends in charge of this city, L.A. will be doing better than that pretty soon. But as long as it's not their kid, will anyone on the City Council even care?

I'm not making this up, folks!!! The Saga of Brenda Barnette goes on and on. This one is pretty bad however. Now where do I start?

BACKGROUND: VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW

According to Brenda Barnette's own stats posted online, http://www.laanimalservices.com/PDF/reports/CatNDogIntakeNOutcomes.pdf, in the last five years, FIVE YEARS, THE TOTAL OF STOLEN CATS AND DOGS WERE ONLY 91, an average of 1-2 cats and dogs a month. From May 10 through April 11, the LAAS stats show a total of 21 stolen. Suddenly we are looking at a number of 64 stolen?

In the last five years, May 06 until April 11, there have been a total of 511 cats and dogs listed as escaped on the previous link for LAAS. That's an average of 8-9 cats and dogs a month. Combined five year averages of escaped and stolen from LAAS's very own stats shows far, far less than that one month of May. Is there an explanation, Barnette? You need to start asking questions, people!!!!

Now, Barnette's department is being investigated for 64 STOLEN ALL TOGETHER, WITH 39 BEING FROM ONE SHELTER! And guess who is over that shelter, none other than Sleazy Mark Salazar. The same Mark Salazar who went to the shelter on a day of closure and it is against policy to do that, and allowed his kid to put his hand in a kennel and get bitten. Sleazy Salazar is over the North Central Shelter with the 39 stolen.

The worrisome thing of this is how Barnette seems to be throwing her employees under the bus according to this one article. (However, a reliable source that wants to stay anonymous tells me rescuers remember these dogs as pit bulls, not cute little fuzzy pups.)

The writer goes on to say and I quote: What's being implied here, obviously, is that shelter workers might be selling the cutest of the caged beasts on the cute-beast black market for cash.

So she's gonna make the employees the scapegoat for what is probably the biggest mistake of her infamous "career". Of course, that's standard for Barnette. While in Seattle, she had a 75% turnover according to employees she hired, not fired. That in five years, suddenly, an employee has figured out how to make a quick buck OR the fact that Barnette issued keys to the "volunteers" just recently. Coincidence? You can decide, I have. Whether a "clerical error", stolen, whatever, there is smoke here. Barnette has no prior sheltering experience in an open door shelter, despite her protests that SHS was open door. And according to those employees, she has little to no managerial ability either.

Barnette has also been quoted as referring to a "possible clerical error", or simply put, a failure of any standard operating procedures and handing over keys to volunteers which has resulted in a "possible clerical error". It's her inability to manage the damage she is doing if there is a "clerical error". She now is saying that these cuties are missing, not stolen, after she had thrown the employees under the bus.

Just look at this email being circulated in May about 400 animals to be euthanized. Did someone say "Desperate times call for desperate measures"? Any chance the ADL-LA has been sniffing around, after all they claim to have all these insiders? You know that the humane community has more than it's share of fanatics, and fanatics steal pets because they can "save them all".

North Central shelter is completely full. They have around 400 animals and this Sunday (5/22) at 5PM they will be putting many to sleep for time and space.There are mommies with puppies on this list, there are small dogs, big dogs, even an old dog or two. THIS LOOKS VERY GRIM but if we all band together, network, put on facebook, craigslist, on email, and everywhere Else, we may be able to save some lives. I can obviously NOT do this alone. Please help!! So far there is THERE MAY BE MORE ANIMALS TO BE EUTHED on 5/22 ( dogs, cats,etc) BUT THESE ARE JUST THE ONES I KNOW OF....

And what about the transports? They aren't being strictly regulated. On those days, anyone can take pretty much what they want. Is this where the "clerical error" might be found? After all if Barnette is willing to give away a shelter to her buds, Best F(r)iends, why not let them cherry pick the cuties and puppies for their "transportation program"? One can only wonder.....

I'd also lay money down on the possibility of either a breeder posing as a "volunteer" or a conspiracy of some kind in that direction. After all, purebreds look alike, easy for breeders to substitute one for a dead breeding bitch or stud. If the breeder isn't showing, it's easy to pass it off, make more, and sell more with no investment or little investment.

Agatha Christie would jump all over this over with the twists and turns. LET'S HOPE THE L.A.P.D. DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calling the homeless in LA! “Get yourself a dog, treat it like shit, and you will be provided a much better life by animal control and have your very own LAPD officer helping you move.”

Talk about hard hearted and you talk about Brenda Barnette. Her flunky, Mark Salazar, just goes along for the ride, his mind is elsewhere according to his background. Where's Pammie with the ADL-LA, why isn't she screaming her head off like she DID with Boks? We can always expect Terri MassiveLardo to come out with a "press release" or an "ADL-LA Alert" that will explain away any involvement by their Saviour Barnette.

I've brought you the story of A1182494. Made for good ink for Barnette but showed no heart, no soul. She left that poor cat to waste away in the shelter, no efforts to make it adoptable. It was on death row. Did it, or will it, make it out alive?

SO NOW…It seems there are these dogs that a group has taken an interest in. The dogs belong to a homeless man and are not being properly taken care of. Awhile back a reader sent in this story about Princess and Dude, two dogs being tethered on very short leads and forced to endure storms because their owner is too lazy to take his shit out of their dog house. These two dogs have been brought to the attention of Brenda Barnette more than once. There are video clips showing the dogs in the storms, trying to get some cover. There are video clips showing the dogs without food or water. Imagine a homeless person trying to lug around bags of dog food or igloos. It's pretty obvious that the homeless don't need a dog when they can't even take care of themselves. And there are video clips of them in the scorching heat on hot pavement, hiding from the sun under a greasy 18-wheeler.

The STAND Foundation, http://www.standfoundation.org/ , has been video taping this situation and making their findings known to Brenda Barnette. Daniel Guss has offered to take these two dogs as soon as they can become available. This weekend, when we had a record cold storm in Los Angeles, these dogs were tied to a truck (no telling what would happen to them when it was moved). www.youtube.com/standfoundation . Six months ago, Barnette seized the dogs, but released them to Lori Weise from Downtown Dog Rescue. Oddly, Lori Weise, a formerly good rescuer, gave the dogs back to the homeless man, and into these horrendous conditions. Guess she worships Nathan Winograd too.

Guess who the two dogs are, yep, Princess and Dude again. No food. No water. Standing soaking wet and freezing because their tethers are too short to get to shelter. And apparently Downtown Dog Rescue was supposed to be taking care of them . Here’s what Ms. GM BB wrote in an e-mail last time, “Lori and friends have raised money to get some kind of a vehicle for Wolf and his dogs." But we all know that many times this raising of money doesn't quite get to the people it was intented for, don't we?

Late in December, Mark Salazar (aka the new Dave Diliberto), worked up a 30 day plan to remove the dogs if the conditions didn't improve substantially. As the 30 days past, he hemmed and hawed, and wanted two more weeks to improve the conditions. And then another two weeks. All with BrenDUH the BreeDER's blessing.

It's not three months later, and the dogs are still being treated like the trash strewn around them.

This morning an LAPD officer was to pick up the dogs and Wolf, move the dogs to temporary boarding and drive Wolf around looking for a new spot. The officer will make sure he is settled safely in a new neighborhood that this officer patrols, they will move the dogs back and hopefully this will resolve the situation.” Will this be a new policy adopted by LAPD to make them more "homeless friendly"?

But here they are. In their “new spot.” With all the old problems. Nothing is getting done to help these two dogs. How many laws have to be broken before Barnette takes action? How long before action is taken against Barnette for not doing her job?

Barnette is demonstrating the attitude of "No Kill", which is, any home, even NO home, is better than humane euthanasia in the shelter if they are unadoptable. IS IT? This cat, Princess, and Dude aren't the first ones to find out the hard way about the cold heart of Barnette.

While in Seattle, there was a rescue of Eskimo dogs. Great for collecting donations, taking in these poor puppy mill dogs, but then what happened. So Princess and Dude remain in their situation, no shelter, no food, no water, no one who cares except for Daniel Guss. Will any of the rest of you care enough to demand that Barnette do her job and get off her $180,000 a year ass or else get her $180,000 ass out of this job and let somebody do it who cares about animals?

And what's up with that Pammie Ferdin? She is sure quiet when her gal pal BrenDUH the BreeDER is fumbling almost every day. What happened to Pammie? She used to claim to be about the animals, but I can't ever recall seeing her in the shelter, saving a life. She has lost the will to help animals, preferring instead to put support behind the likes of Nathan Winograd and Rick Berman. But then, losing your husband will do that to you, although in this case it might be for the better. Another story, another day.

BRENDA BARNETTE'S PLAN TO GIVE PERSONAL INFO ON PUBLIC OFFICIALS TO VOLUNTEERS AND THE ADL-LA

Well, the ADL-LA just couldn’t resist a slam at LAAS employees in their latest e-boast praising Breeder Barnette and volunteers. (Which reminds me, where is that great website a volunteer is doing for Miss BB? The ADL-LA promised it would knock our socks off within a couple of weeks. Is Miss BB getting cold feet about her volunteer--who we hear may have not been “free”? More on that later!)

So, back to the latest ADL-LA BB Boast Blast. While they talk about how amazing it is that one volunteer is trimming bushes at the East Valley shelter, they don’t mention that shelter employees have come in on their own time to do this for years.

And the ADL-LA (or is that a Commissioner writing?) just had to remind us that employees are basically really bad. Here’s what they say, “pet guardian's are actually taking their time to e-mail the employee/volunteer who helped them! We haven't heard of this before. In the past it's been complaints about how badly the employees treated potential adopters and what a "turn off" it was dealing with trying to adopt an animal from LAAS.” Well that’s your first mistake. Maybe if you got your head out of your other body cavity you’d have heard a lot of things. Employees get animals adopted and help people because they decided to take hard jobs to help animals and they have always received praise from the public. Maybe you’ve just been too busy condemning them to try to make yourself look important, Pamster!

Speaking of volunteers, a very interesting e-mail was apparently written by an LAAS volunteer, saying that BB really appreciates them and is going to have them run the shelters because of her “if it doesn’t hurt an animal, it’s OK” policy. In other words, forget City policy and rules that protect the public and employees. If a volunteer thinks it’s a good idea, they can do it.

Here’s something scary! According to this volunteer, keys are being made for volunteers to come in to shelters day or night and have access to the animals and computers, and they will soon be telling shelter employees and managers what to do, because (the e-mail says) a call to Miss BB or her flunky Mark Salazar from a volunteer will “get you what you want regardless of what the shelter manager says.” Can this be true? (If not, Miss BB, you are invited to let us know exactly what is going on in the comment section below.)

Along with that, according to this enthusiastic volunteer, Miss BB is making arrangements so volunteers will have access to records in the LAAS chameleon system on ALL pet owners in the city, especially dogs. That includes the public AND public officials.

Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Council person, Commissioner, or Hollywood celebrity, or City employee, pretty soon all LAAS shelter volunteers may be able to get your address and phone number from your dog license or if you’ve ever called for help or someone has complained about your pet. Volunteers don’t go through the screening like a civil service employee. How safe does that make you feel after the threats and “protests” by the ADL-LA have made the Mayor and past City Attorney and dozens of city employees run and hide and caused one GM’s wife to have a heart attack?

To verify that they are not getting information they ”need”, the volunteer e-mail talks about a City Council person adopting a shelter dog and when the dog was recently found tied up over 50 miles away, the owner did not come to get it when called. Naughty, naughty council person, if that is true! However, the e-mail says that pretty soon volunteers will be able to call or write or do protests at homes of any public person to make “an example of them” if they don’t’ keep their pet. That information is supposed to be confidential. That is why LAAS officers and employees can be fired for disclosing public records.

It seems BB has become the “Chief Volunteer Coordinator” now and is building her own system and rules. Volunteers come and go and LAAS doesn’t really know who they are (we saw that happen when she was in Seattle)! If they have access to the part of the computer that has private information and if Queen BB allows this, she and the City can be sued royally if any of a public figures private information is exposed or any harm is done to them or their family.

One more thing, Pammie, and whoever is now writing the ADL-LA BB Boast Posts, the bonds for the LA shelters were $154 million dollars, not $52 million. The taxpayers, not the ADL-LA and not Breeder Barnette, own the shelters and decided they will be run according to City rules. If BB doesn’t know that, maybe a nice lawsuit and the courts can teach her, and YOU, that lesson ROYALLY!

We all know the stories associated with medical research. We all know of the plight of animals in entertainment. We all know of the poor chickens who are forced into cages so small they can't turn around and forced to lay eggs until it kills them. We know of the gestation crates of pigs and what a horrible life they have. Yet, this is part of the NAIA, they protect those involved in this type of cruelty by fighting legislation that would make these animals lives a little better. Barnette actually participated in raising funds for this, she probably is still a due paying member of the Seattle Kennel Club who raises funds for the NAIA.

The Seattle Kennel Club, along with NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance), is hosting an "Organizing to Win" seminar on Friday, March 7, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1801 E. Valley Road in Renton and will be speaking to help organize the people and clubs in Washington State to defeat Bills that are currently being heard in the House and Senate. We all know that if we do not organize NOW and show the AR's that we are united, it will only be a matter of time before BSL and MSN is on our doorsteps like it is in other states. The Vincent Bill was designed specifically to address the fact that breeders were pulling their breeding stock from shelters, thus a law to alter all shelter animals. How soon Pamster forgets this little tidbit of the Vincent Bill. How easy it is to pull a purebred from the shelter and pass it off as a "papered" product if your product has died. The vast majority of purebreds look alike so this is easy to do.

I pose this question to you Pamster, how many breeders have you walked the street with in demonstration? Got an answer? Wouldn't take you long to add them up, right Pammie? Where's the $$$$ dollar pledge from all these high-income breed clubs??? How many hours a week is each breeder pledging to come down and clean shit out of kennels?? Guess that wouldn't fit the pattern of "caring" as much as making a training video of something that "looks like a shelter dog" or "doesn't look like a purebred." Why don't you ask these breeders for money for advertising for LAAS?

This is the bottom line, ADL-LA. You made a mistake, you refuse to admit to it. Should be easy enough since BB failed your Messiah in King County, he ain't poking his head around too much, is he? Help Me!! I've Been Rescued By Brenda Barnette

Help Me!! I was Rescued By Brenda Barnette for a News Release. I’m “warehoused” at an LAAS shelter. She didn’t give me a name, except A1182494.

When Breeder Barnette first got the LAAS GM job, those who did their homework were deeply alarmed that L.A. had selected a breeder and AKC Legislative Liaison who opposed our spay/neuter law to run LA Animal Services. Nathan Winograd supported her. Did you notice that Mr. Winograd has become silent now that Brenda Barnette's kill numbers are UP (not heading for no-kill as she promised?) Wasn't it the Whino himself who says the killing can stop "OVERNIGHT"? So six months of overnights and the killing is up?

When the informed complained about L.A. hiring a breeder for GM, the cry from the fawning uninformed Winograd followers (ESPECIALLY THE ADL-LA) was, "The shelter animals don't care who saves them! Brenda Barnette will save them!" (The Whino knows that Barnette actually worked against the shelter animals while in Seattle, preferring to import unvaccinated dogs from Kern County over the shelter animals in King County.)

And what happened to the ADL-LA? They used to be strident advocates for improved shelter results. Now they are pandering and manipulated operatives spewing disconnected misinformation and using pathetic overdramatized scenarios to try to make Brenda Barnette look good (or at least like she’s doing something!).

Recent example. A cat. Let's call him "A1182494." Because that's what Brenda Barnette calls him. (Whoa, isn't one of the "No Kill" rules is to give names to the animals?)

The ADL-LA dutifully cross-posted a "News Release" for Brenda Barnette about A1182494.

It seems poor A1182494 got injured in Beverly Hills. That eventually led someone to call in SmART, the LAAS specialists in capturing small animals in life-threatening situations. The injured cat had evaded a humane trap, tranquilizer pills, and multiple dart gun shots.

Finally the SmART team "rescued" the cat. WHERE WAS THIS CAT NEEDING RESCUE? Amid the chaise lounges. Brenda Barnette with her very questionable "wisdom" deduced that a specialized team with specialized equipment (at a pretty hefty salary paid by tax money) "rescuing" a cat from under pool furniture is newsworthy. (Wow! Don't slip on the suntan lotion!)

She issues a "News Release" describing the "rescue." The SmART team is excellent, but really, Brenda. A news release for rescuing a cat from a Beverly Hills chaise lounge??

The real news will be if Brenda Barnette can actually get this cat adopted.

Brenda Barnette’s riveting news release said the cat was impounded at the West L.A. shelter on January 16, 2011. It is now February 16th, one month later.

Where is the A1182494 now? Right where he was when he got impounded 31 days ago. Stuck in his little shelter cage like all the other cats Brenda Barnette has done nothing new or innovative to get adopted. (Thank goodness, he didn’t end up in somebody’s garage or basement!)

Wouldn’t any halfway decent GM who had nothing better to say in a news release than that a cat was "rescued" from Beverly Hills pool furniture would at least say something cute, endearing, lovable, or heart-grabbing about the cat to help him get adopted?

Not Breeder Barnette. Maybe because Brenda Barnette's choice is poodles. She demonstrates no affinity (or adoption ideas) for cats. In her news release, buried in the hyperbole about SmART, is an easy to miss one-word description of A1182494’s personality as "sweet." That's it. A 641 word news release and that’s all she can come up with to help save his life.

The very least she could have done is announce an adoption date, offered a reduced fee or something. If you care to look, you will see a most unbecoming picture of this poor cat, scared in a cage with an e-collar on. Sure, people will rush right out to adopt this cat after seeing that picture! Any idiot knows that the cat deserves a better photo than that.

Did Barnette bother checking the photo? Did she ask the West LA shelter to use the “rescue” story to help promote this cat? Does she understand or care how poor this cat's chances are? Does she have any idea at all to help him?? Winograd and ADL praised Brenda Barnette's masterful adoption skills. What has she done to "market" poor A1182494? Or was the goal the “news release” and nothing after that mattered?

So A1182494 is “lost” again. This time among the other 1,000+ LAAS animal photos on the LAAS website. Brenda Barnette's "news release" makes herself and the SmART Team look good, but not the cat, who is now in peril.

Brenda Barnette used the cat for her own purposes but is evidently not doing a damn thing to help him get adopted. It is now one month since A1182494 was impounded. ONE MONTH since, January 16, 2011, he has been waiting. Waiting for Brenda Barnette to do SOMETHING to help him get a home and save his life. This special “rescue” by the GM has been overlooked by even the New Hope partners.

But can someone tell A1182494 that it’s not just him? Sadly, the other LAAS cats are in bigger trouble than before Brenda Barnette got here too. Look at Brenda Barnette's LAAS cats statistics. The last four months show fewer cats falling under the live release stats. In other words, more cats dying under Barnette.

Just wait till the spring when those litters start rolling and watch the euthanasia go up because Barnette is pulling a Boks trick, called WAREHOUSING. Look on the website and see animals there for several months, sitting in a cage, getting kennel stress and becoming sick and/or less adoptable with each passing day.

Also want to mention that in the last four months, Barnette's adoption figures are LESS than when the department was under Davis and Barth, and Brenda in her ultimate wisdom dumped Linda Barth—the only person with administrative knowledge-- because Barth wouldn’t be her puppet like flunky Mark Salazar. Barth knew how to say “No” and she knew when something was badly wrong. Barnette doesn’t want to hear “No” because SHE is always right! (Tell that to A1182494!)

Hey, somebody out there—if you want a “sweet” cat, the GM assured us a month ago there’s one at West LA Shelter. He doesn’t have a name. Just ask for A1182494.

New Contest: Who's the Biggest Liar - the ADL-LA or Brenda Barnette

Recently the ADL-LA, the newest supporters of agribusiness cruelty and research on animals, issued a statement that employees of LAAS and rescues are supporting BB. Yeah, right, and my s**t doesn't stink. No names of course to back up this ridiculous statement. As usual the ADL-LA makes their general statement to the effect they have insiders. No one in animal control that has a right mind would report to the ADL-LA. So I thought I would post a couple of emails that were sent to the Council members and Barnette.

Brenda Barnette has been sending loads of dogs in the back of cargo vans to Canada to get them out of her shelters and keep her numbers down. Many rescuers said they were worried about these animals going out of the country and to somewhere that they couldn't be traced to see what happened to them. An article on a newsite last week disclosed that Canada still has "pound seizure." They release animals from the shelters for medical research--any lost dog may possibly end up in one of the medical lab cages also. Thousands of animals go from shelters to labs each year. Your staff rescued a cat from under a chaise lounge in Beverly Hills. Really, Brenda? What a marvelous feat. Really deserves boffo press coverage.

What happened with your "flyers" and your "aCATemy Awards" Brenda? Haven't heard anything about those. How about that foster program that puts animals in basements (which few people have in L.A.)? What’s happening with that? What happened with the hundreds of foster homes you promised? Haven't seen a press release about that. How about doing actually doing something about the horrible guard dog situation in South LA and the many illegal breeders about whom you’ve been alerted? Haven’t seen any action on either of those fronts.

Busting illegal breeders whom you can easily find by looking at Craigslist - there are new ads for pit bull and chihuahua puppies every day - now THAT might deserve a press release.

You have done absolutely nothing to decrease the killing of cats and large dogs, pit bulls in particular, which are the two largest populations of animals in the shelters. Are you ever going to actually do the job our taxpayer dollars are paying you for or just continue keeping a low profile and meeting with your AKC/breeder friends?

And killing shelter animals?

Many people involved with the shelters suspended any negativity about you after your appointment was confirmed by our City Council, and everyone has been watching to see if you perform. Doesn't seem to be much going on, does there? You've been here long enough to have made a positive, dramatic difference by now, but all you've shown is that you are not up to the task.

The kill numbers are up, and adoptions to the public are down - both significantly. What ARE you doing? The most recent stats, posted by YOU, are hideous:

We have long memories and little patience for your incompetence. How much longer are you planning on staying here? Do you have a time frame for your real intentions, which are obvious?

It has been clear from the beginning that you want to repeal the mandatory spay/neuter ordinance that we worked so hard to enact. As a breeder and the AKC Legislative liaison who has been directly involved in fighting mandatory spay/neuter legislation here in L.A. as well as elsewhere, you really have no business even being a City Shelter Manager. Amazing that your appointment was confirmed. Your appointment is akin to putting a crack dealer in charge of our health care system.

It is also clear that you wish to help your AKC/breeder friends by increasing the pet limits without requiring spaying and neutering.

I and others would really would like to know when you plan to leave so that maybe - just maybe - the next GM might be someone who cares about doing a proper job and actually saving animals' lives.

We all agree on those 3 points. The problem is that you are doing nothing to accomplish any of those goals. You say you are willing to work with and communicate with those in the community, but you have not demonstrated so. I've heard many in the community say that they actually miss Ed Boks. That speaks volumes about you.

You've been here 5 months collecting a fat paycheck and making no progress. I only wish to participate with those who are trustworthy and display public accountability, transparency and honesty. That doesn't include you.

This response you sent me doesn't address any of the issues I presented. You seem to be adept at rhetoric, but not forthcoming with real solutions or even information.

What about the breeders? Your friends and others? What about innovative programs to stop killing shelter animals? What about the stats that show a huge increase in killing on your watch? When a pathetically attended unsuccessful adoption event was held at our $19 million shelter you ducked out to meet with your AKC breeder friends at Galpin Ford. You didn't even take the time to market the event and actually do something to ensure adoptions. Care to discuss that?

That poor cat who was shot with a tranquilizer gun in Beverly Hills was identified as a male. In this email you say "she." Do you not even know the sex of this poor cat?

And don't you think that this was overkill? This was a house cat - not a mountain lion. I'm sure your SMART team is well-intentioned, but couldn't they have used less drastic measures than dart guns to capture a small cat?

This is another example of your non-existent plans and ideas to help cats.

This cat has been available for adoption since Thursday January 20th at 8 am, and is still not adopted tonight, nine days later on Saturday night January 29th.

Your "news release" does not describe the cat in a positive manner that could make someone want to adopt. Your "news release" attempts to make you and the SMART Team look good, but not the cat who is in peril. The cat is possibly in isolation where no one will even see him.

The cat looks (appropriately) terrified, is an adult, and is not particularly remarkable on his own. For a cat who is the subject of a "news release," you would think the General Manager would at least make sure a good photo is on the LAAS website. You didn't even do that (see below).

What are the odds that this cat will be adopted? It appears the "Good Samaritan" has no plans to rescue the cat after calling attention to him.


What will you do with this cat now, Brenda? Transport him to somewhere else to be killed and then boast to everyone that he was saved from LAAS?

This is despicable. Please do the animals a big favor and leave. Leave now. We can't afford you for another 5 years.

"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" is commonly used to describe someone willfully turning a blind eye to the immorality of an act in which they are involved.

My readers know that I have a problem with the importing of dogs when the local shelters are still euthanizing. Brenda Barnette, while in Seattle, was doing this importation, illegally I might add, and at the same time was working with Claire Davis and Kim Sgro to "create" instability in the King County shelters for Barnette's advantage. Note that Claire Davis used the term "create" in a letter to Dow Constantine when he turned against this mutant clan. http://workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com/2010/06/terrorist-or-idiots-you-decide.html Can't chalk it off to a slip of the tongue since Davis is an attorney and well aware of the English language usage. I feel this importation scheme is not to save pets in as much as it is being used to keep the "rescues" in business while it puts the pressure on shelters to go "No Kill". Taking homes from shelter animals is immoral and these "rescues" doing the importation are more guilty of shelter pets dying than the shelter ever could be.

Also of note is Barnette's feeble attempt to offset her lack of responsibility in this matter. She has given orders to these "rescues" that they must qualify the receiving rescue and the only qualification is that they be "No Kill". YET BARNETTE IS AWARE OF HER FRIEND, KIM SGRO, WHO SENT KATRINA DOGS TO A "NO KILL". ALTHOUGH SGRO WAS TOLD THIS "NO KILL" WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A HOARDER, SHE THREATENED PEOPLE WITH A LAWSUIT RATHER THAN CHECKING IT OUT. It is almost commonplace now to hear about these "No Kill" abusers. Just like using the term "Humane Society", "No Kill" is now a generic term that anyone can use, doesn't make it so however.

This isn't about saving lives, this is about making money, brokering dogs and trying to cram "No Kill" down our throats. One pitiful blog in LA has a video of this last transport, only thing is that the video is not of this last transport, maybe another one, but not the last one. The last transport was done with an individual and not a very nice one either. I ask you if this one person was able to take all these dogs on walks or if he allowed them to sit in their poop and urine for about a day. This blogger is a real nut case who supported Boks, then didn't support Boks, hated the ADL-LA, and now is in bed with the ADL-LA, just can't make up his mind. I doubt he has one really. Now he is kissing up to Barnette just like he kissed up to Boks, refusing to see the evidence in front of his nose.

Use your heads people. These "rescues" expect us to believe that there are places that have no problems with a pet overpopulation. Course isn't that the philosophy of "No Kill" no pet overpopulation? None of these "rescues" have investigated whether the local shelters where these imported dogs are going are still euthanizing. As long as those local shelters are euthanizing for time and space, it is morally wrong to send more dogs into the area. They aren't saving lives, they are taking lives. And most of them are non profits. Do their donors understand what they are doing, much less agree with it. We donate locally because we want to see the benefits locally. It's a scam, plain and simple, a devious plot to force more killing of shelter animals so these cultists can push Nathan Winograd's program. There's many more effective ways to save shelter animals, but this ain't one of them.
