I'M BACK !!!!!!!!

Looking back, this blog has been neglected for too long. So much has happened in the past year. Between the demise of No Kill, hoarders running all over the country and transporters loadin' 'em up, not a lot of time for the blog. I would like to ask the readers to submit links for stories that you want to see captured here for easy searching. Where do we start?

I think the first place with be with the 'movie' of Nathan Winograd. The man doesn't do one single thing to help animals directly but he has time and money for a movie? C'mon. Whiney Boy criticizes HSUS for not spending their money on shelters, does he realize he is the pot calling the kettle black? He does nothing to contribute other than run his mouth. His actions, or lack thereof, prove he is full of it or rather full of himself. He actually believes he will walk the red carpet at the Oscar's this year. Does his ego know no limits?

Take a look at his version of 'sell out' crowds at his movie. I would say there are more empty seats than attendees. Maybe it was intermission and they all went to potty. I'm quite sure he has some kind of excuse. Here's but three.

JUDIE, JUDIE, JUDIE

I've written on this very blog about Judie Mancuso, even called her a hero. So you can imagine my disappointment when I received her latest email notice.

LA City has passed an ordinance banning pet shops from selling puppies and kittens from puppy mills. Do I have a problem with that, not at all. However, there is more to this story than that.

It appears that Judie doesn't grasp the underbelly behind this action, it wasn't in the vein of helping our shelter animals. Judie is subscribing to that piece of meat thrown out by Koretz and Barnette. Judie's version:

And for those of you wondering where people will be able to find that pure bred puppy or kitten they just have to have, this ordinance will help make those folks do their due diligence in finding a reputable breeder, instead of the impulse buy of a puppy or kitten shipped in from a mill thousands of miles away from the Midwest. We cannot control these cruel mills in the Midwest that ship tens of thousands of puppies and kittens per year into California (while we’re killing over 500,000 in our shelters) but we can certainly decrease the demand for them.

Then let's look at the "impulse buy" referred to. Those in "reputable" rescue don't care for those impulse adoptions/buys. And we also ask people to carefully consider bringing in a pet to their home. So now are they going to do the "impulse buy" thing with these shelter animals in pet stores? Shelter animals usually come with baggage, is this going to add to that baggage when they are returned, thrown out in the back yard? What is the deal here? Are we not in this to seek quality for our pets? No, Judie, this was not done to help, this was done for vile reasons and it will not accomplish what you think it will. Don't be gullible.

BRENDA BARNETTE: JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THERE COULDN'T BE ANYMORE, UP POPS BREEDER BARNETTE

I pondered all day on how to write this blog post. It could be complicated with loads of links proving what baggage BB brought with her to LA plus the baggage she has created since being in LA. Or it could be fairly simple. Let's try for the latter.

Barnette is attempting to take donations made to the shelter animals to reinstate a TNR program, using a back door since she is prohibited by a court decree to not participate in TNR activities. Is this not what No Kill/Winograd accuses HSUS and others of doing, taking donations deceptively? Tell me what the difference is. Winograd screwed his followers on the TNR issue originally. Who hasn't Winograd screwed, speaking of certain people.

This blog has more than you want to know about Breeder Barnette, her days in King County, Washington, conspiring with cohorts to "undermine" Animal Control for personal gain. Only when it was to come out to the pubic about this conspiracy did King County suddenly turn around and basically kicked BB to the curb. Unfortunately she ended up in LA. You can search on this blog for several words such as ACO Guild, Claire Davis, and of course, Brenda Barnette. This blog followed her long before she came to LA. Besides she is a disappointment to Winograd anyway, she failed to deliver in Seattle and now she is failing to deliver in LA, choosing instead to jump into bed with Best Fiends.

I do like the way it summarizes the situation with Barnette. I said all along that she was brought into LA to privatize and now people see that happening. At one point this blog was almost fully dedicated to LA City and Brenda Barnette's escapades.

I finally gave up hope and moved on. Winograd is trying desperately to get his morbid CAPA legislation installed and that has taken far too much of my time away from this blog. I apologize for that. I ask that readers in LA please support this new blog. Politicians want to hear from constituents, not outsiders. It's time to be heard on this issue of No Kill/Barnette. A goal of no kill is what we want, not the agenda/program of No Kill.

It is bittersweet to say, "I told you so" to those in LA that Barnette was there to privatize. Many said no, resisted the thought. I fought Barnette in King County along side of the ACO Guild there, advising them about "No Kill" and how it operates. I know about this woman. She was part of a plan to privatize by undermining animal control. What is "undermining"? Lying, same difference.

(Barnette gave away a brand new shelter to Best Fiends) "The adoptions from the Best Friends shelter have been less than stellar … and I think that is because the agreement only allows them to take the 'leftovers' … meaning animals that are not adopted by the public or taken by rescue groups…so that means they are left with a whole lot of pit bulls, Chihuahuas and tabby cats … making it more difficult for rescues to get animals out of the shelter would leave more 'desirable' animals to go to Best Friends and thus improve their adoption numbers to justify a private group taking more responsibility by doing better," a key source tells me.

Some local animal rights activists agree with that appraisal entirely and think that a privatization contract will favor New Hope.  Others think that the second half of the statement only speaks of rescue agencies that aren't performing optimally.

"My feeling is that she is not a very good communicator, and that hinders the progress of any kind of partnership and progress in project management," animal activist and animal education proponent Paul Darrigo told me.  Darrigo spearheads a group that has provided education to Reserve Animal Control Officers (RACOs) whose vision has been to provide LAAS with fifty reserve, fully-empowered Animal Service officials, the way the Sheriff’s Department and the Police Department staff reserve officers.  But unlike earlier General Managers, Barnette has taken administrative actions that diminish the presence of RACOs within the city and many speculate that the only reason to do so is to pave the way for a single private controlling organization.

 The NBC 10 I-Team begins a three-part investigation into dog rescue organizations.  In Part 1, the I-Team focuses on a group called Help Save One.  The I-Team received complaints from unhappy clients who said the dogs they paid to save never arrived.
An NBC 10 I-Team investigation that took us to shelters in North Carolina and South Carolina found that Stracaluzi has left a trail of outraged animal adopters, broken laws, diseased animals being brought into Rhode Island and southern shelters wondering why Stracaluzi hasn't paid them tens of thousands of dollars for helping to rescue dogs.

Besides being immoral and unethical for sending dogs into areas still euthanizing for time and space and taking homes from the local shelter dogs so they have to die, these transports are rolling animal abusers.


This was sent to me. I do want to say that this participant used some common sense. I do hope she learned a valuable lesson at least.


And who wants to bet that Bett Sundermeyer in Houston probably is in agreement with these transports. Transports are a God send to "No Kill" because the motto is "outta sight, outta mind". Transports make it possible to be both for the "No Kill"ers.

 I am writing this on behalf of the transport volunteers who gave of their time this past Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22, to get a dog named Soldier from Houston, TX to Augusta, GA. I drove the last leg, from Buckhead to Augusta, GA. It is critical that all transport volunteers, coordinators, and rescues hear my story. I am angry, bewildered, and saddened by this entire situation, as are the two transport volunteers who have worked with me in the aftermath to find out how this happened and determine a way to mitigate the damage. Although it was traumatic for me, I will try to give the facts in an unadorned fashion

The dog was being transported from a foster, where he had been for approx. 2 weeks after being pulled from BARC in Houston. His time had run out. Soldier arrived at BARC injured and with an embedded collar. He was given some vet care, but has obviously had a very hard life for such a young dog (my vet says he is approx. 1 year old). He was being transported on a moderated run by a reputable coordinator. The transport went well, he seemed to have a good overnight, and on Sunday afternoon, he made it to the last leg, which I drove. My job was to get him the last 80 miles and hand him off to the woman who was listed as the “temporary foster” on the run sheet. We had touched base by email and settled on a meeting place in Augusta, though she lived across the river in South Carolina.

When I met her, I immediately had a very, very bad feeling. She just seemed “wrong.” I have been transporting for about 5 years, and there were many red flags. For example, when I remarked that I was surprised he wasn’t neutered (the run sheet said the foster would have it done) she said she was surprised, too (if she was supposed to have it done, why was she surprised?). Soldier looks a bit like a pit mix, although it’s very hard to tell, and she said that when dogs with pitbull blood aren’t neutered by the age of 20 months, it’s “too late.” She said he looked much older than she expected. I said what did she mean, “too late,” and she said they’re “ruined, too aggressive, there’s nothing you can do.” Then I found out her full name, which is SHIRLEY BARNES. The name rang a bell, and not in a good way, but I couldn’t place it. I don’t know how to explain my feelings of dread. I very much wanted to find a way to hold onto him, because I felt she wasn’t right. However, to remove a dog from transport constitutes theft. I tried to tell myself I was just being paranoid. She put Soldier in a too-small crate in her van, and as she drove away, I had my daughter take down her license plate number: That’s how worried I was. On the way home (just a 10 min. drive from the handoff) I called the coordinator, but could not reach her. I left a message (which has never been returned) asking about the foster’s background.

At home, I ran into the house and Googled her name. It only took about 20 seconds to discover that she had been found guilty on nine animal welfare violations and that 24 dogs were impounded from her Aiken County home. I felt hysterical inside and was kicking myself for not following my own “gut,” rather than procedure. I tried to contact the rescue in Texas that was listed on the run sheet, but got only the man who had fostered Soldier for the last two weeks. He was utterly bewildered and knew nothing about the foster arrangements, or even what state the foster lived in. I called the foster’s county sheriff's department, but they told me to call AC on Monday, the next day. Finally, I tried calling her, and didn't expect to reach her (the cell number she gave was a wrong number and she had told me a whole story about how hard it was to reach her by phone or email in her rural area) but by some miracle, she answered the other number. I told her that I'd absolutely fallen in love with Soldier and had called the rescue, who said I could adopt the dog right off the transport (no way would a reputable rescue allow that without an application). I really laid it on thick. Turned out, she hadn't left Augusta yet and agreed to meet me and let me "adopt" Soldier. When I went back to our handoff spot, I got him in my car and sat there for a while talking to her, trying to draw her out. She opened up and told me that she had gone down to Miami at Thanksgiving and brought up 26 dogs from the AC there. She said that she goes up to Greenville periodically to get 10, and "always ends up bringing back 20 or 25." She seems to believe she is really helping these dogs.A rescue friend of mine was able to overnight Soldier, because I have four rescued dogs of my own, one of whom is fear-aggressive, and the next day I took Soldier to my vet to be boarded and neutered, which is scheduled for tomorrow. I went to take him for a walk today, and he has a great spirit.

Here is what we have found out since Sunday:

1) The rescue under whose license the dog was pulled in Houston had no idea the license was used and has no knowledge of this dog. The founder lets one woman who does "street rescue" use her license, but insists on being kept in the loop. She knows nothing about the pull from BARC or the fact that it is her rescue's name Soldier was pulled under. She is supposed to be checking with that person to see if she did it on her own, but I haven’t heard. Bottom line: That rescue seems to have no interest in Soldier (though they may be legally bound to).

2) The foster in Texas who physically pulled the dog and kept him for two weeks IS affiliated with a legitimate rescue, but was only doing a favor and that rescue is not backing this dog, either. We have not heard from this gentleman since Sunday when all hell broke loose and he didn't like the tone of some of the back-and-forth on email. He says he has nothing to do with this, although he might be willing to take Soldier back, though he's "over quota."

3) The young woman who arranged everything through Facebook lives in Albany, NY, has never done this before, and is not affiliated with any rescue, nor did she apparently have plans for getting him adopted or moved up north to her. She is very apologetic about the whole situation and has offered to pay for his boarding and neuter. She apparently "met" the foster/hoarder, Shirley Barnes, on a FB page for animals from BARC and decided that, with Shirley's help, she could save this dog from death. She claims to have three references for Shirley, and that they were so good she made no arrangements for a home visit or checked her out with local AC, but she has yet to furnish those references to me, despite repeated requests. I now doubt that they exist. I also don’t know how she connected with the rescue under whose license Soldier was pulled (possibly the street rescue person was on FB, as well).4) The transport coordinator, who does many, many of these every month, is "reputable," though I and others have come to question how thoroughly she checks out the receiving rescue, etc. In this case, she apparently checked out the rescue of the foster in Texas, and everything came back good. However, that rescue, as you will recall, has no stake in Soldier and so its reputation is immaterial. Some of the drivers involved in this transport have driven for her dozens of times. Yet, she has been silent since Sunday, when she said she checked out the rescue.....and then said nothing more. Not a single call to find out how the dog is doing or what our plans are for him, now that he’s become largely our responsibility.

5) I have spoken to law enforcement and AC in Aiken and Edgefield counties about Shirley Barnes. I initially thought—silly me!—that they would act on this information (primarily what she said about bringing in dozens of dogs) by getting a warrant and going on her property to see if there was a hoarding situation. She is under court order in Aiken County not to own or keep dogs at her house. However, I discovered that because she has moved from Aiken County, where she was convicted, to Edgefield County, a rural county which has no animal welfare laws, we can't go after her hoarding directly.  This is why we are trying to find out everything we can about her methods  (hence, all my phone calls to Texas, etc.) so we can try to cut off her access to animals. One of my fellow transporters has called the Greenville AC (where Shirley said she gets dogs) and has alerted them. This FB “Note” is the first step in getting the word out about Shirley Barnes, but also about what can go wrong when people don’t “do rescue right.”

Transport coordinators need to DEMAND answers to their questions and confirm that the people involved are in good standing with their local animal controls. A simply Google search is a start. Transport drivers need to be sure the coordinators and rescues involved have done their due diligence….imagine ending up with a dog you hadn’t planned on caring for because people dropped the ball! Or imagine being in the situation of handing over a dog to someone who makes you fear for the dog’s safety. One minute, you’re feeling good about helping, and the next minute, you’re faced with an ethical dilemma and possible heartbreak. People who want to help, but have no experience, should start with their local shelter or licensed rescue. People in the North (where I’m from) need not assume that only the animals of the Deep South require your assistance. Act locally! Animal rescue has a steep learning curve and you should start small. Finally, all rescues MUST check out their fosters THOROUGHLY! Shirley Barnes may come off as a sweet grandma to someone who doesn’t know what questions to ask. ASK QUESTIONS and CONFIRM THE INFORMATION. The sad truth is that animal rescue attracts some unbalanced people. While we may feel sympathy for them, THE ANIMALS COME FIRST. Please share this. Yes I know, I know. I haven't posted too much lately on Breeder Barnette. She's been involved in a lot lately. The investigations are finished and none have been in Barnette's favor.


I am waiting for some things to happen so I can combine all her recent failures along with the future failure to make one helluva post about this retched woman who suffers with penis envy.

Breeder Barnette is sure living up to her name these days. Paul Koretz has become a puppet for the LA breeding community and neither he nor Barnette give a hoot about how the breeders contribute to the shelter population.

A. Adopt an "Interim Control Ordinance" (lCO) that would establish a three-year prohibition of sales of live dogs, cats and rabbits in retail businesses (ie. pet shops) commencing six months after the effective date of the ordinance, with the exception of those businesses that can show proof that the animals were obtained from animal shelters, humane societies, registered rescue organizations or local breeders that meet all federal, state, and City requirements for the breeding and selling of animals within the City of Los Angeles.


Do you see what she has done? She is closing the door to outside competition for her breeder friends, making a monopoly for them. Now what business wouldn't want government to do that for them, except that it is illegal.

Then again, if Koretz wants to run for office, breeders have lots of money to contribute whereas the rest of us who truly care about animals don't have the money to contribute. We spend it on taking out the results of breeders from our shelters.

BRENDA BARNETTE: THE WITCH ON A WITCH HUNT

Actually I would prefer to use the initials of BB instead of "W"itch. Yes, indeed this woman is destroying LA Animal Services and all the while the Mayor is more interested in gaining the gay vote than in animal services.

Two animal control commissioners have resigned lately, both closely connected to Barnette. One was voting on issues of reducing fines on unlicensed dogs and all the while, this broad was breaking the law herself with unlicensed dogs. The other, well, she probably resigned to take over the ADL-LA with her extremely close association with it.

All the senior officers with all their experience was put on administrative leave and from the looks of it, it was not warranted. This article is a long read, but extremely well researched and documented. When you finished reading, call the Mayor's office and demand that Barnette be given her walking papers.

LA ANIMAL SERVICES SINKS FURTHER UNDER BRENDA BARNETTE AND PAUL KORETZ

Well, folks, just when we thought LA Animal Services couldn't sink any lower, guess what? It hasn't bottomed out yet! Now Koretz squirmed himself even further into the Barnette's World of Breeders and so that he, as new head of the Personnel Committee, will have sole oversight of "animal welfare:. Yep, it's now the LA City Personnel & Animal Welfare Committee. Quite a stretch, huh? Where's the Homeless Children Committee or the Elderly Poor in the Streets Committee? Is he talking about city personnel & animals as one group that need welfare? Well, what ever it is, it certainly is a manipulation and wouldn't you say, a conflict of interest for Koretz?  Isn't this the proverbial fox in charge of the hen house?

 

Here are the facts. Before Barnette got here, Koretz ran to the Mayor and whined his way onto the selection team. Since MV is always glad to share the blame, he jumped on that. So there was Paul Koretz, looking like the proud papa introducing Barnette at a press conference and talking about her being the best thing to ever happen to LA animals.

 

What did he base that on? Well, she was a breeder and the AKC Legislative Rep in Seattle. I guess that was good enough for him, since some of Koretz's best friends are breeders, according to a letter sent to him and posted by a big-time Encino breeder. (Remember that one? "We MUST have this increase in animals...Louis Krokover of the Encino Neighborhood Council wrote to Koretz as Koretz pushed for 10 adult animals and all the pups and kittens you want to breed in every yard in Los Angeles.). By the way Krokover also seems to have a little thing going with one of Koretz deputies! It's sort of incentuous, just like dog breeding.. Koretz, who thinks he is the expert on animals because he has a cat and had a puppy mill dog he got from a pet shop, he says.. So that qualifies him as an expert?

 

Now with LA Animal Services under his thumb, Barnette can continue torturing her staff and screwing up the department and getting what she really wants--Destroy LAAS! Remember in Seattle, Claire Davis replaced her on the committee and wrote to the CAO of Seattle, "We have spent 1-1/2 years trying to destabilize King County AC." Well, looks like that's about how long it's taking in LA but now Barnette has had some practice. And she has "Sleazy" Salazar who already proved he knows how to wreck the workplace and get the City sued.

 

So now, with Koretz, Barnette and Slazar in total charge, watch out City Council. The Big One may be coming. I heard it cost Riverside several mil. With the larger harassed staff at LAAS, let's see how that would add up.

 

And to get back to that conflict of interest, Koretz hired Barnette, has used her to try to get the animal increase for his buddies and can we say probably his best campaign contributors???? They are joined at the hip on all the stupid and useless things Koretz wants passed and Barnette gets to continue whipping the employees in her department while Mr. Personnel Committee Koretz turns a blind eye. It's just so perfect! And so sadistic! Pity the Animal Services Department. They are sinking like that Italian cruise ship, sunk by a City Council that doesn't care whether there are officers in a fire or earthquake disaster or out keeping the bad assed pit bulls from attacking people in LA. Well San Diego had three deaths by pit bull and a lot more attacks in just last year. With Koretz, Barnette, Salazar and pit bull loving Best Friends in charge of this city, L.A. will be doing better than that pretty soon. But as long as it's not their kid, will anyone on the City Council even care? 

AS USUAL, BRENDA BARNETTE NOT DOING HER JOB

As she drifts along, Breeder Barnette continues to show her love for the breeding community. First she wants to increase household limits and the only ones to benefit from that are breeders. Certainly not normal pet owners. You might not understand that if you haven't lived in LA. We, if anything, have problems with too many dogs now, in backyards, on the streets. Feral cats abound in LA. So we don't need more, Barnette.

Then she turns around and addresses barking dogs after attempting to put more barking dogs out there? Try as I may, I don't see this making good sense. Plus she just gave away a brand new shelter paid for by the taxpayers, and she wants more animals in the City, more strays, more owner surrenders, more cruelty, okay.

Now there is a mystery to be solved as well.

But things might change with a new law, now in effect, to fine dog owners $250 to $1,000 — that is, if anyone enforces it.

 Then, in 2010, a bizarre series of events unfolded as City Hall tried to crack down. First, in May 2010, in a story that went national, the Los Angeles Times, Daily Breezeand CBS reported that the City Council voted 10-0 to create a $100 fine against obnoxious dog owners. Some media suggested the fines could generate up to $1.8 million annually.

Nobody at City Hall seems to know what happened to that vote. There's no record of it on the city website, and the Department of Animal Services never implemented a $100 fine — much less collected $1.8 million.

Instead, last year, one veteran animal services employee told L.A. Weekly that he had never heard of a $100 fine. And despite thousands of annual complaints, the department held only 83 formal administrative hearings to force owners to control their barking dogs.

And then Barnette trying to establish herself as a pro pit nutter, actually ruled against two just and fair rulings for an elderly couple. Barnette overruled in favor of backyard pit bulls.

Lopez says. "I walk around with earplugs in, and I sleep on the floor or in another room. It's made our lives a living hell and my husband has had two heart attacks."She says two administrative rulings by the L.A. Department of Animal Services were in their favor, and Lopez says hearing officer George Mossman was fair and just.But Barnette, a busy city department head dealing with frequent political headaches, found the time to intervene. Lopez says Barnette overruled Mossman.The case wended through the bureaucracy for months. Eventually, Animal Services ruled against the dog owners.

Yet nothing changed. Lopez says Animal Services officials today let the barking to continue in Highland Park. Lopez concludes that Barnette, who moved here from Seattle in 2010, suffers from an illogical fear of being perceived as "anti–pit bull."

Just another case of Barnette grandstanding without using her brain first. Increase the number of barking dogs, then an ordinance against them barking, and then no enforcement. 

COUNCILMAN KORETZ, IS YOUR HEAD IN BRENDA BARNETTE'S SANDBOX?

Well, well, so Councilman Paul Koretz has  published that he's had "TREMENDOUS" success and adopted out a FEW animals at a shopping mall. Are a "few animals" a tremendous success? Why doesn't he tell us how many animals were shown and how many got adopted? Koretz needs to be realistic and admit that it is NOT easy to get homes for shelter animals, and just taking a few to malls isn't going to solve the problem. If he got his head out of Barnette's sandbox, he might be able to see that we've got a REAL problem and he isn't helping it.

Take Me Home Day

Councilmember Koretz joined Westside Neighborhood Council and LA Animal Services for a "Take Me Home" day at the Westside Pavilion. The Westside Neighborhood Council has been working with various shelters and rescues throughout the district to hold weekend adoption events in the mall to find homes for dogs and cats. The adoption events have been tremendously successful, with several dogs and cats finding permanent homes. (Several doesn't sound like "tremendously successful" to me!)

Or is Koretz learning just how hard it is to adopt out shelter animals? Show us the numbers, Koretz, not just your opinion.

AUDIT SAYS NO GUNS MISSING AT LA ANIMAL SERVICES

Remember back when Brenda Barnette called in the LA Police Department to investigate guns in the shelters, guns used in the field to euthanize wildlife? That particular decision was questioned because why call in the LAPD, why not an internal audit? As usual Breeder Barnette was trying to take the emphasis off her poor decisions and make employees scapegoats. A waste of taxpayer money is what I call it. Now the audit is done, there are no missing guns, just a quote about poor record keeping. Now who does that record keeping, why none other than Breeder Barnette.

An audit of guns and ammunition confiscated from city animal control officers found all were accounted for, despite initial reports of missing weapons (Could this be filing a false report, BB?), officials said Thursday.

Still, the agency now plans to sharply limit the number of guns in an effort to reduce the killing of wildlife, a move that has upset some officers who say the weapons are needed to put down injured animals.

The Los Angeles Police Department tallied 122 guns seized two months ago from six Animal Services shelters after months of tabulating them by make and serial number.

"There were no guns missing, that's the good news," said Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette, who requested the audit. "But we learned what we need to do record-wise."(Oh please, don't try to white wash it now, you screwed up!)

She requested the audit after at least one service weapon used to euthanize wild animals was suspected to be missing, possibly as a result of sloppy records, Barnette said. (And again I ask, who keeps up with this, who is reponsible? Records are kept for the education of the management staff, yet you couldn't figure it out and called in the PD.)

Now it appears that some animals will probably suffer in the field because of a change of policy. Officers will be injured trying to load wildlife to take to the shelter. Boy, this Breeder Barnette is one stupid broad.

BRENDA BARNETTE: ONCE AGAIN FAILS TO PROMOTE SPAY/NEUTER

When will this broad learn that spay/neuter is the one most important thing when it comes to pets? Once again, Breeder Barnette sends out a "press" release  that fails to mention spay/neuter. I can appreciate Halloween tips but the biggest and more important tip of all is missing.

HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY TIPS

Make this holiday fun for your furry family members, too!

Halloween can be a festive and fun time of year for children and families, but for pets it can be stressful and even dangerous. Here are some ways to keep it fun and safe:

This is the perfect time to make sure your pet is licensed, microchipped and wearing up-to-date identification. A dog license helps our Officers get your lost pet safely home. 

          

Plan ahead to keep your companion animals in a room away from the front door when trick-or-treaters are visiting. It is too easy for them to become frightened by the goblins and slip out the door.

Chocolate and other seemingly harmless ingredients can be poisonous to dogs and cats, so keep them out of reach. Dispose of the wrappers where pets can’t get them to avoid choking.  Also, remember that children may not understand why Fluffy can’t share their treats, so use this as a teaching opportunity.

Tail wagging is a good thing – unless it’s done around a lit candle! Keep candles and lit Jack-o-Lanterns at an appropriate height where your pets can’t knock them over or get burned.

A decorative collar is far more comfortable than a costume for your pet. Make sure your pet thinks a costume is as much fun as you do before you dress them up for Halloween.

By following these helpful tips, Halloween can be a fun and safe holiday for pets and people alike!   

Trick or Treat! 

Now, my suggestion and something I do each year at Halloween. I put a sheet in each child's bag with information regarding spay/neuter. I also include information regarding chocolate, onions, grapes, etc. being toxic to pets. I tell the children that the information sheets are for their parents. Every year that I have done this, I get at least a couple of visits from parents about this information and it results in pets being altered. 

Why can't you put this kind of emphasis on spay/neuter, Breeder Barnette? You can't because your mindset is that of a breeder and we don't need a breeder in charge of animal control because you won't enforce the law regarding spay/neuter. Go back to where you came from, Barnette.

Well, here's another one and this time it points to the outright lie that Barnette said when she said that Pam Ferdin had nothing to do with the butchering of necessary trees at a shelter nor the racist banners put up on the shelters. Plus, the nerve of Barnette and Ferdin to put a Best F(r)iends logo on those banners, ignoring all the wonderful groups in LA, soliciting donations for Best F(r)iends instead of the local groups.

Barnette is not in this to save animals, that's already been proven with her actions while in Seattle. I'm just waiting for a good investigative reporter to check out what happened in Seattle, why Barnette really left there. Could it be the lawsuit for her emails that can prove her conspiracy to undermine animal control so she could take it over? The poor ACO Guild is caught between a rock and a hard place in releasing those emails because it might jeopardise their rocky relationship with Dow Constantine, the CAO, who fought beside Barnette until he realized that this was coming out in the open. Then he turned a different tale and developed a "regional" plan. I have on this blog a letter written to Constantine from one of three, of which Barnette was one also, that clearly states the conspiracy to "undermine animal control".

BRENDA BARNETTE: WHAT IS THE REAL REASON BEHIND YOUR GETTING RID OF ASSISTANT GM KATHY DAVIS?

Are you afraid to have someone on your staff that really knows about animal control and knows why none of your stats add up? Someone who would have fired Mark "Sleazy" Salazar? Was it because Kathy Davis wouldn't carry out your dirty work?

First you got rid of Linda Barth who said "NO" to you. So now you had to move Kathy Davis out. Big mistake, BB!!! You think you've got free rein now. You just got rid of your "lifeline." Kathy Davis and Linda Barth could write. You can't even get through an e-mail without bad spelling and grammar errors. Do you think the Council won't notice that the brains are gone?

You think you can cover up your own screw ups on numbers by pointing the finger at employees but bottom line is that you need these employees. Who is Sleazy going to use to get his work done? There's not going to be anybody to delegate it to and his total impotence, excuse me, incompetence will be hanging out there. (Oops, didn't mean to reference his past record of  sexual harassment claims but it just slipped out.)

You will both be exposed soon.  It's on its way.  You aren't near as clever as you think.  You're in the BIG city now.  You brought the spotlight on YOU and  you can't even get a website right.  So now you may have to come to work.  You can't run a city department from home without Kathy Davis.  Yeah, everybody knows!

BRENDA BARNETTE: STILL CAN'T GET IT RIGHT ABOUT HOW TO TREAT EMPLOYEES!!

This woman's stupidity never ends. This week I received one of her "News Release" alerts about a couple of ACO's rescuing a dog in a drainage ditch. STOP THE PRESSES! Obviously Breeder Barnette doesn't realize that this is what ACO's do, day in and day out. It is wonderful she is commending this Reserve Officer but so how about a little appreciation for ALL of them and a News Release about some of the really heroic things they do for animals and people? Is the only reason this young man got credit because you want to claim the RACO program as "yours" and show off how wonderful "you" are? Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with him at all? Could that be the case, BB?

And, I'm sure this will be the next alert that will be put out by the new ADL-LA Commissioner liaison!! So bring it on. We're ready!!! We already know the drill.

Just last week, Breeder Barnette was condemning employees, insinuating that they were the culprits stealing puppies from the shelters. I can see it now, an ACO trying to make a windfall by selling shelter dogs, c'mon, get real. Big mistake, Barnette. You should have been defending the employees, even if there were a problem. What you don't seem to understand is that YOU are the one who takes responsibility. It reflects more on you than the employee. That's why you get the big bucks. You don't just run around crying because Sleazy Salazar doesn't know how to do an investigation on a problem. That's probably because he IS the problem!!! Maybe you haven't noticed. Your can expect to be on the hot seat as long as he's making your decision. You used the employees as a scapegoat rather than draw attention to one of your biggest policy blunders, giving the volunteers keys and easy access to the kennels.

BTW, while we're talking about blaming employees, don't think people don't know about what you did to a long-time employee who is now leaving for greener pastures. Great talent and you again needed a scapegoat. From what I understand, the world will soon know about that one because there are certain "confidential" e-mails that an activist already talked about publicly and there's a lot more to come.

Make up your mind, BB, which is it? Are LAAS employees bunch of thieves and dumbies and only your groupies get praised? You can't have it both ways. As an employer, it is your duty to defend your employees and you have failed in that duty. Hats off to those ACO's who crawled on their bellies in nasty stuff to get this little dog and a big pile of shit to Barnette for dumping on her employees.

On June 2, 2011, the East Valley Animal Services Shelter received a call from a concerned citizen about a dog she saw in the Los Angeles River drainage, at Coldwater Canyon. Reserve Animal Control Officer Paul Maradiaga responded and found a poodle down in the cement drainage channel. Officer Maradiaga contacted Animal Control Officer Stacey Dancy for assistance. Once on scene, Officers Dancy and Maradiaga entered the flood control channel gate and sloshed through the muck to retrieve the scared and trembling little dog. Once back at their Animal Rescue Vehicle, Officer Maradiaga scanned the dog for a microchip, and got a hit. Following up on the information, Officer Maradiaga contacted the owner, and notified her that her dog "Toby" was safe in the custody of Los Angeles Animal Services, after having been rescued by Animal Control Officers in the Los Angeles River. Ms. Ruiz came into the East Valley Shelter and was happily reunited with Toby.
