JUDIE, JUDIE, JUDIE

I've written on this very blog about Judie Mancuso, even called her a hero. So you can imagine my disappointment when I received her latest email notice.

LA City has passed an ordinance banning pet shops from selling puppies and kittens from puppy mills. Do I have a problem with that, not at all. However, there is more to this story than that.

It appears that Judie doesn't grasp the underbelly behind this action, it wasn't in the vein of helping our shelter animals. Judie is subscribing to that piece of meat thrown out by Koretz and Barnette. Judie's version:

And for those of you wondering where people will be able to find that pure bred puppy or kitten they just have to have, this ordinance will help make those folks do their due diligence in finding a reputable breeder, instead of the impulse buy of a puppy or kitten shipped in from a mill thousands of miles away from the Midwest. We cannot control these cruel mills in the Midwest that ship tens of thousands of puppies and kittens per year into California (while we’re killing over 500,000 in our shelters) but we can certainly decrease the demand for them.

First let's take the "reputable" breeder statement. Does that mean all of Koretz's and Barnette's buddies? http://workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com/2010/11/brenda-barnette-and-her-breeder-friends.html  Can anyone say campaign donors?

Then that leads to who really benefits from this ordinance? Could it be those "reputable" breeders who proclaim Barnette as "one of them"? http://workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com/2011/01/brenda-barnette-hailed-as-one-of-us-at_18.html

Then let's look at the "impulse buy" referred to. Those in "reputable" rescue don't care for those impulse adoptions/buys. And we also ask people to carefully consider bringing in a pet to their home. So now are they going to do the "impulse buy" thing with these shelter animals in pet stores? Shelter animals usually come with baggage, is this going to add to that baggage when they are returned, thrown out in the back yard? What is the deal here? Are we not in this to seek quality for our pets? No, Judie, this was not done to help, this was done for vile reasons and it will not accomplish what you think it will. Don't be gullible.

As I read the actual ordinance (its not in the news realease) it does allow the sale of shelter animals and those from legitimate rescue groups (granted approved by LA AS) in the pet stores. So it would seem to give "storefront" advantage to the shelter/rescued animals and would prvent such shops from selling "breeder" dogs unless of course the rescues actually become fronts for the breeders. While not impossible to do it would seem fairly risky over time to try that as at some point I would think they would be exposed?

I have no problems with storefront adoptions. I know that many people do want to save a life but just can't bring themselves to those shelters that No Kill has painted as horrible.

And yes, that can happen and probably will. The breeders are chomping at the bit right now, they are awaiting with open arms. Those breeders that support Koretz and Barnette, that is. This also will mean more kennel permits being issued probably and again the local breeders are happy with that.

My point to Judie is that she was used to get this passed and it was not with a good heart. She is now a little darling with the breeding community probably. Sometimes what you wish for isn't exactly what you end up with. More ordinances on breeding would have helped because that would keep intakes down in the shelters. They just can't understand how it all works.

Would not disagree that more ordinances on breeding would have been the better solution or at least an additional one. I know in Texas a recent State Law requiring breeders to abide by certain standards has caused some wholesale dumping (40 plus) of pure breed animals as the breeder either could not or would not comply and knew it. Bad news is aniamls were dumped. Good news is those breeders are out of business. Haven't done the math but even at 50/50 male female of dogs dumped which is probably not correct that is a lot of "future" dogs off the market.

LA City Shelters have an over abundance of chihuahuas and pit bulls. It only stands to reason these are from breeding. It makes sense to address breeding except if you are drunk on No Kill which says there are plenty of homes. Mark my words, this will be one of the prime examples of the humane community's biggest failure, LA City, and one of breeding's biggest successes.

It looks like that will thwart any attempts to reduce the euthanasia rate but that is not their goal I guess. Privatized or not at some point they will have to reconcile themselves to the fact their are too many animals and look at the sorce of those animals. In Texas the shelters are full of Pit Bulls or their mixes. Part due to the fact they are hard to adopt but one has to ask where are they all commming from? We already know the answer. Maybe the rest will figure it out. I hope!

Buying a dog from an AKC breeder means you are supporting puppy mills.

End of story.

"Reputable" AKC breeders profit from puppy mills. It's how their dog shows and everything else get paid for.

AKC breeder profits help buy the multi million dollar lobbyists that lobby FOR the puppy mills and even the dog fighters.

AKC breeders support every kind of animal cruelty conceivable.

Plus many of those "reputable show breeders" are running puppy mills on the side, off the books and hidden.

The AKC as it exists now is a toilet. Buying an AKC registered dog (or UKC) is supporting the toilet.

Until the issue of spay neuter, and the surplus of unregulated breeders, is dealt with, shelter pets will continue to die.

Whenever someone shows up claiming that ordinances on breeders aren't needed and that results in more dumped dogs- THAT IS CRAP and conmes from the propaganda book of the breeders (and the breeders who fund Winograd no kill)

First of all, breeders who dump dogs after ordinances are criminal PUPPY MILLERS that are releasing animals from their jail cell cages so they can get a home or be humanely euthanized and released from their suffering and long, slow deaths and torture.

They also won't be selling the unaltered puppies that buyers then turn around and breed anymore. Breeders are "dumping" unaltered dogs by the hundreds of thousands non stop every year with their regular businesses thanks to no ordinances!

Then a large percentage of those "dumped sold" dogs reproduce in buyers' homes because they are sold unaltered to maximize profits.

The real "dumping" is PUPPY MILL AND BREEDER SALES every day, month, and year, more and more and more to keep making money

Breeders like Barnette and her AKC nazis of course don't care about these suffering dogs because the puppy mill tortured and emprisoned dogs are making money for AKC breeders and the rich AKC and ukc, etc, business. All those big salaries for AKC and UKC leadership, expensive rents, dog shows, everything. It all runs on puppy mill money!

They use the "dogs are dumped" routine as a lie to trick the rescue community into opposing ordinances for breeders. Why? Because these breeders are cheating on their taxes and don't want to get licensed, and also are abusing and torturing dogs for cheap production of puppies, and also selling sick dogs and getting away with it because they are unregulated!.

Ordinances for breeders means they can't get away with the cruelty and frauid as easily!

Other breeders DON'T dump dogs after ordinances. True "responsible" breeders aren't affected by the ordinances! Smaller breeders aren't affected, and larger breeders just follow the laws, pay their taxes, and don't abuse animals, which is what they should be doing anyway, but many won't until laws are passed. They also stop selling sick dogs, which they have been getting away with thanks to no laws, and that includes the "show breeders."

Breeders oppose ordinances for the simple reason that the breeding industry is corrupt as hell at this point in time and wants to stay that way!

Maybe someday there really will be ethical breeders that stand up for the dogs but they are few and far between, and bullied into submission by the AKC nuts who are so greedy and selfish they support dog torture so they can have their dog shows and registry machine, and some of them can keep being massive tax cheats.
